Victoria, BC. Canada: Charm and beauty in a Canadian Setting! Victoria, BC, you get there by sea, or plane, as it is on Vancouver Island! It's worth the effort to see the lifestyle, and experience this comfortable, relaxed city.
|
|
Using the car ferry, you catch it from Port Angeles in Seattle which takes about an hour. This lands right in the harbour in Victoria city on the waterfront.
The other ferry leaves from Tsawwassen in Canada,it takes 90 minutes winding around outlying islands, and lands at Swartz Bay on the Island. The trip from the ferry terminal takes about 45 minutes into central Victoria. These are first there, first on basis and it does pay to be there at least an hour before to get your vehicle berth.
 |
You can't book for the trip straight across,
only if you are stopping at one of the islands.
For Foot passengers, there are buses and
taxis available for the landing. On the ferries
are cafes, and bathrooms and comfortable
lounges.
Check out the log fish!! They can be up to
40 foot long and float in the tidal change. Chances
are you will see Dohl dolphins in huge pods and
whales as the Strait of Georgia is the
migratory path for whales. |

The biggest attraction in Victoria is Butchart Gardens. The gardens are actually 30 minutes (21 kms) from Central Victoria at Brentwood Bay. You can take the car, or catch the bus, and the route is well sign-posted. There is lots of free parking and umbrellas and you'll need at least 3 hours to see it all. Pack comfortable walking shoes! The Butchart gardens were created from an old, abandoned quarry and they are overwhelmingly colourful. In May they were full of tulips and forget-me-nots and rhododendrons in full bloom, and fresh spring foliage was on all the deciduous trees.

The Empress Hotel
Crystal Gardens
The Royal British Columbia Museum is worth a stop. Allow several hours if you are interested in the history of Canada's first inhabitants, which they call 'the first nation'.The models and exhibits are extremely realistic and you'll find unbelievable Indian art work. The masks and baskets are particularly impressive. Entrance fee is $C8.00 open 9-5.
Outside the Museum, look for the tiny Thunderbird Park and it's large totem poles. They stand regally by the entrance of the Thunderbird Park carving studio where young artists are learning the skill of traditional carving. Using an enormous tree which had been splintered into smaller pieces they create great modern and traditional carvings. |
Victoria is a university city with a great life, alive at night, and during the day, it just doesn't shut down!
Driving in the city means you need a map available from hostels, garages etc, so you can use the easy one way systems. There is free parking on weekends and 6pm -6am daily. Parking other times is metered and hard to find during the day so see the sights around the city during the day, and park easily and free after 6.00pm.
There is much to do so start by heading for the Harbour, in lower Victoria in the Government Street block.
The Empress Hotel is a magnificent looking building which dominates the harbour alongside Parliament Buildings. The huge Welcome sign in the flower beds, gives you a clue to how you will feel in this city ~ its wonderful and feels safe.
Behind the Empress Hotel look for the Crystal Gardens. They are hot, humid, subtropical gardens with flamingoes, macaws, a butterfly house and a variety of animals. This is where you will find the smallest monkey in the world! Believe it or not they are as small as an adult finger. Entrance fee is C$7.00
Underneath the Empress Hotel is the Miniature World. It is fantastic! It will take 3 - 4 hours to see it all as there is so much to see. Model Railways, Fairy Stories, Nursery Rhymes, Second World War themes, times in history are all modelled in miniature with incredibly fine details.Commentaries and interactive displays add to the interest and it very absorbing.
Entrance fee is C$8.00 open 9-5.

Parliament Building is lit up at night and looks spectacular, buskers add to the atmosphere with their music and entertainment. Take a horse and carriage, or bike taxi around the lower harbour. Sit and listen to the music, watch the magicians, enjoy the rock and roll buskers or the quartets in a bustling place full of diversity. |

If you have a car follow the scenic drive signs from Douglas St, in the inner harbour into Dallas St and enjoy the Coastal views.
Just down the road you'll find the large 153 acre Beacon Hill gardens. Drive through until you find a place you would like to stop. There is no entrance fee. It's a stunning park with water features, wild chipmunks and squirrels and birdlife. It's a relaxing interlude to sightseeing and a good family picnic spot.
Carry on around the well signposted scenic coastal drive and you'll see Seattle's snow covered mountains clearly across the Strait. Look out for seals on the rocky shore, the special seating areas, and the walkways down to the beach. Check out the palatial homes in this area, with their grand entrances and well established landscaped gardens.
A left turn into Sinclair Street takes you past the University of Victoria. Currently there are large rabbits of all colours, enjoying the comfort of the well maintained grounds.
So, if you are looking for beautiful gardens, interesting attractions, a safe and welcoming environment and plenty to do, which may even include a close encounter with a whale, consider Victoria, BC for your next adventure. |
